Friday Focus: How a chief of staff can help you

Earlier this week the university announced that my working title would change from ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ executive officer to chief of staff (CoS). This shift has no impact on my role, duties, or direct reports at ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½, but it does make it easier for stakeholders inside and outside the organization to understand what my position does for our ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ community. With the opportunity to write this week's Friday Focus, I want to expand on this shift and provide the campus community with a look inside my role. If stakeholders don't understand what my position does for the university then they may miss an opportunity to benefit from the services I can provide them.

ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ recently submitted our annual operating and capital budget request for FY24 to President Pitney. The President will weigh our needs alongside those of UAA, UAS, the system office, and what she feels is an appropriate request to the governor. ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ is requesting an operating budget increase to support employee compensation increases (to be determined at a UA level), fixed cost increases, and strategic academic, outreach and research initiatives that align with UA’s Goals and Measures and ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½â€™s Strategic Plan.

Experiential Education: ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ leaders go to Nome

Each July, ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½'s Northwest Campus partners with the local school district in Nome to offer a unique and transformative experience to incoming K-12 teachers. The course, ED 420 Alaska Native Education, provides a continuing education opportunity for teachers to learn about the history of education in Alaska as it pertains to Indigenous peoples. For over ten years, this enriching experience has provided dozens of new teachers valuable insight into the knowledge and ways of life that have, and continue to, sustain the first peoples of the Bering Straits region.

Hosted by UkpeaÄ¡vik Iñupiat Corporation (UIC) this celebration brought together North Slope Borough community members, for profit and not-for-profit corporations, and both past and present Arctic researchers, including many of us from ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½.

Pause in paper, cardboard and plastic recycling

The ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ Recycling team normally collects paper, plastic, aluminum and cardboard. Due to a temporary closure of the borough's Central Recycling Facility, the team will begin picking up these materials up again when the CRF has re-opened.

I spend a lot of time thinking about how ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ is perceived, how we talk about ourselves and how to tell our stories, while advancing this university and ensuring that ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ is a place of belonging for all students, faculty and staff.
