Throughout the last week, I have received several questions about how ҵ is responding to the emerging coronavirus threat. As I am sure you are aware, the World Health Organization declared a “public health emergency of international concern” in regards to the virus and is monitoring the situation.

Our response is being guided by our emergency operations plan, which includes sections on a wide variety of situations, including pandemics. Our emergency manager, Doug Schrage, is in contact with his colleagues at UAS, UAA and UA statewide and is keeping me up-to-date on the situation.

Although there are currently no confirmed cases of the virus in Alaska, we have ҵ employees and students around the world. We are monitoring the situation beyond Alaska, particularly in locations where we have students studying abroad.

The U.S. State Department has issued a Level 4 travel advisory telling the American public not to travel to China. The UA administration is discussing specific procedures for university travelers, but until those are issued, ҵ employees and students should continue to follow guidance from the and the .

At this point, there are no closures or event cancellations planned.
