It's great to be back
Daniel M. White, ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ chancellor
|
I hope you all enjoyed the Independence Day holiday and the week since. It is great to be back at ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ and very much an honor to serve you as ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½â€™s chancellor. In spite of the challenging budget times ahead, I am ever optimistic about our future led by innovation and entrepreneurship in all areas of our mission.

It was heartening to me this past week to find prospective students and their parents touring the Fairbanks campus, led capably by our passionate staff and ambassadors. In the universe of choice, these students selected ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ because they believe a ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ education will prepare them for success in life. There is no doubt in my mind that they chose wisely, and I thank you, faculty and staff alike, for your dedication to our students.

Earlier in the week I found the UA Museum buzzing with visitors from all over the world. While the galleries show visitors Alaska’s natural history, art and culture, researchers below decks are making our museum a research enterprise that universities around the world look to for answers. Summer is a time that our researchers are in the lab and field, innovating, solving, designing and, most importantly, learning and teaching. Thank you for your dedication to your field of work and for choosing ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ as your place to discover.

Although I am not new to ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½, I plan to spend the next few months visiting with each of our units so that as we think about how to address our challenges ahead, I will know you and you will know me. If you see me, please stop me, say hello and share with me your big ideas for ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½. I am confident in our future because I am confident in you, your passion and the entrepreneurial spirit that has made ÃÛÌÒµ¼º½ a destination for many. I look forward to the days, weeks and years ahead.
